She didn't know it yet
Life looks different when you view it from different angles.
Seated behind a desk.
Standing on a ladder.
Lying in a coffin.
She was dead and she saw life differently now than when she was alive.
Her body didn’t matter anymore.
Her body was like an old book swollen with humidity, nibbled at by countless insects, faded in the sun.
Death was a gradual winding down.
You weren’t supposed to leave death and go be with the living, but she did.
She managed it somehow.

The ghostlike figure is seated but there is no chair
She is in shadow whereas everyone else is in sunlight. There are no shadows behind her. She is shorter and smaller than the others. This is not a double-exposure. It is a real photograph.

The little brother
The three Larkin girls posed for a picture with two friends (the dark-haired girls on either end). The Larkin sisters' brother, Timothy, had died of pneumonia six months before this photograph was taken. All three girls and their parents recognized Timothy's ghostly image, left, posing with them.
